The Brief

Japanese Mountain Retreat is Victoria’s only exclusive resort for couples, providing accommodation, mineral springs bathing and day spa packages. The resort is set on five acres of manicured gardens in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. Tag The Cat was approached to help overhaul the brand and to improve the online experience for customers arriving on the website.

The Result

A key objective identified at the beginning of this project was to elevate the visual and narrative elements of the Japanese Mountain Retreat brand. This required simplifying and repositioning the brand message to more accurately reflect both the beauty and level of luxury at the resort, and the desires of couples. The new brand took a very different direction, embracing a dark, sophisticated colour scheme of deep blues and gold. The new organic shaped logo paid homage to traditional Japanese onsens. New messaging emphasised romance, privacy, and connection, reinforcing the beauty and sophistication of the visual elements of the brand.
A new website design and build followed. The website was to be highly visual, and allow visitors to easily browse and book the large range of accommodation and day spa packages. The business utilised two external booking systems to process bookings, requiring integration of the new website infrastructure, and providing users with a seamless experience.
The final part of the project involved recruiting a feature couple for a one day photo shoot. We provided full creative direction, working with the actors and experienced photographer, to produce a series of romantic narrative-driven images for use across all brand collateral.
